Fishing Southern Maryland
United States
Приєднався 16 кві 2007
Raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I use to go fishing with my father and grandfather focusing on the small inland bays of Virginia's Eastern Shore. I've lived in southern Maryland for over thirty years as I have been working as a chemistry and physics teacher in Calvert County. A few years back I had some students talking about how many fish they were catching and it lit the fire under me again, so now I travel all around the southern Maryland area, usually with my kayak, seeing what is biting. It could be a freshwater lake, like St. Mary's or Lake Wheatley (in Gilbert Run Park) or it might be the Chesapeake Bay right down the street from the house. If it swims, I want to catch it. My oldest son lives in the Clearwater area of Florida and I often visit him so I take fishing gear down on every trip. As an educator, I like to show what I'm going, what I'm using and of course what I'm catching! Come along for the ride.
Sincerely,
David

Catching a fish on a Rubber band
From July 19, 2024: I've been wanting to try this for quite some time. Back in February I saw a video of a guy in Scotland catching trout on a "maggot" fly made from a rubber band. I tied a few for myself and have been waiting for the right day. Today was that day.

Things to think about while fishing in summer
Переглядів 30712 годин тому
From July 17, 2024: Trying to beat the heat, I took the kayak down to St. Mary's Lake this morning. Paddling along the southern shoreline, I was able to catch a few smaller largemouth and a few bluegill. While doing so I decided to give you a couple of things to think about, so SCHOOL is in session! #fishing #kayakfishing #summerfishing

From July 16, 2024: Going on vacation is a fantastic thing! Visiting places, sight and more importantly people you haven't seen in a long time is definitely worth it. But coming home and sleeping in your own bed just hits different. Despite high temperatures I walked down to the beach this morning to see if I could catch a couple of fish. I also shared a little about the trip that I just got ho...

From June 28, 2024: It amazes me that I seen loads of people fishing local ponds during the cooler months when the state comes around to put in trout. But no one is there during the summer to catch the other fish that live there. Join me today to see if the pond at Calvert Cliffs State Park still has fish. With the closure of the striped bass season coming in a couple of days, get out and hit y...

From June 22, 2024: My wife and I drove over to Salisbury, MD to visit my sister and her husband. We were about an hour early so I took advantage of having an ultralight rod in the car and fished the creek coming out of Leonard's Mill Pond just north of town. Man. am I glad I did! From June 20, 2024: To be completely honest, I've been having a time on salt/brackish water. The current "heat dome" has messed up the trends in my area for fishing and I've been having trouble finding fish some days. Today I went out looking for spot, croaker and white perch. I hooked something completely different. Check it out. #fishing #kayakfishing #chesapeakebay Time line: 00:00 - Intro 0...

From May 7, 2024: I have used this technique I learned in Florida a couple of different times. I believe that it is called a "Goofy rig" and consists of a banana jig with a teaser hook. I tip the jig with a piece of @Fishbites in an attempt to catch bottom feeding fish like croaker and spot. Today something else bit! It was another "knot tester!" #fishing #chesapeakebay #invasivefish

Very cool 👍🏻
Ive caught three 30+ inch snakeheads on a weekend this year with a lure made with something most people would call household junk. If it has form and function, fish will hit it.
@@bipperbaits3652 that’s amazing!
Keep it’s the law in Maryland
Congrats on the retirement! I must be old because I don't even own earbuds lol
@@PDad2340 I’ve got a set for when I’m doing g yard work, but other than that I don’t use them. They were a serious problem the last couple of years when I was teaching.
you can catch stripers in freshwater, anyting bay/tributaries is off limits. from what i understand. so freshwater and the surf from OC should be good to keep.
@@PizzaShrimp Considering I fish the Patuxent River and the Bay most of the time this time of the year, I do my best to avoid them.
Great video. Hello from Canada. I just love grubs. Some of the things I like about them are, they are way easier to acquire and keep in good condition opposed to live bait. They work on pretty much every species of fish, you can imitate anything a fish eats with them by changing the colour and how you fish them, you can fish it in almost every way, lots of people don’t throw them so fish are typically not used to seeing them. They work scented or unscented if you have allergies or going into restricted waters. And they are usually pretty dang cheap.
@@ColtonWilson3000 Oh my gosh, this is a perfect description! Thank you, Thank you!
Thanks to your son for his service! What kind of fish do you think that was that you lost in Germany?
Thank you very much, I'll be sure to relay your thoughts. To be honest, I think it may have been a just a common bream. UnfortunatelyI'll never know.
great video, I wanted to know can you do a shoreline series for us guys who don't have a kayak
Love the idea. I'll have to see what I can do.
A day of nice bluegills on ultralight is always fun. I've had many of those signs
ALWAYS! Thanks for watching!
tried to launch in centennial lake in columbia today, it was swamped. so i went home, some days its hot other days not a single person on the lake. its annoying sometimes.
@@PizzaShrimp I understand that completely! Good luck out there.
Definitely got your share of excitement on that trip. Good work getting the hook out 👍👍
It was a blast! Thanks for watching!
Like a yum worm 🪱
@@Jesuslovesyou150 Yes sir! Always like using them.
What are you using for the lure
@@dominicrivera5141 I predominantly use grubs by Yumm (usually their “Christmas tree” color. If not that using “panfish magnets” by Leland Lures (or Trout Magnet)

There's some pretty nice sized Pumpkinseed sunfish in there.

@@krhawkins91 it’s a nice area to visit! This was my first time trying to fish it.
That is really cool fishing in the blind that’s what we used to call it when you have never fished there before! Great Video thanks for sharing
@@johnleskinen734 that’s a great way to put it! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Excellent video. I've been catching mostly white perch in Middle River, MD. Thanks
Yeah the white perch are out there in droves. Thanks for watching!
reminds me of a place, deep in a ravine. I was about 30 and there were native brook or brook trout not big fish but they were there, I thought I was seeing things. The water was cold and clear. The one thing that I remembered, it was in the high 80s when I started my hike and it was, i guessing about 67 in that bottom . I went back a couple of times, seems that ravine got deeper each time. Just thinking it was close to a perfect place.
What an awesome story! Thanks for sharing it with me.
Do you have a link for your lures or a setup vid
That day I was using “Trout Magnet” lures from Leland Lures. They were on a 1/16 or 1/32 oz jig. Everything seems to bite them.
🎉I subscribe
Thanks for joining in on my journey!
Nice
Thank you for watching!
You should really swim with the fish it’s fun
Pretty sure I would have been thrown out of the park if I had.
Glad to see you back at it Great Video and thanks for sharing!
Thank you sir! It’s been a struggle at times.
Notice the intros getting better and better from just jumping straight in to having your own intro nice man 👍
Thank you sir! I love the feedback.
I feel like i saw you today at gilbert run were you with a little boy
No it wasn’t me. I haven’t been there in a couple of weeks. How did you do?
@@redlightshipsno bites but it was a hot day and the afternoon that’s why going fishing tomorrow though so i hope i get something
My brother did some creek fishing this past Friday in an urban creek here in Baltimore. Ended up catching 62 green sunfish. Those blighters can really take over.
They are so aggressive!
Nice. Wet your hands before handling a trout. Dry hands remove their protective coatings that help them survive.
Deep creek is a tourist trap.
I've only been once, and the pleasure boaters almost make it too difficult to be on a kayak there.
Another Great Video thanks for sharing
Thank you sir!
Guys fishing southern maryland uploaded again
Love the shoutout!
Thanks for posting this, I fished this lake in the 70's and 80's as a kid and now live in the West. I sure miss fishing MD lakes and ponds.
An eastern shore man transplanted out west huh? Hope you’re having fun out that way. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I respect the fishing and cleaning up trash thats why ur the best
Thanks for watching!
Going to gilbert run today hooing to catch some largies and maybe bluegills
Lol better luck next time love watching your vides you earned a sub
Yeah - sometimes I jinx myself. Thanks for watching.
Awesome i went fishing there because i live close and always been going there but never caught anything gonna try again this weekend
Good luck!
Go down to parkers creek that runs under Solomons island road where jerrys place is. It is a creek very similar to what you just fished. And I’ve caught all sorts of sunfish bluegills and panfish like that down there.
Great suggestion, thanks!
Got some big bass further down the creek when it opens up on flat iron road if you’re ever looking for those.
Yeah there’s lots of different species swimming in there.
I have fished that creek a few times in the summer. Great on a hot day. If you walk down the bridge over the road, there are usually a ton down there.
It is a great place to cool off and catch fish! Thanks for commenting!
How far south are you talking? I've caught redbreast out of the Patuxent and Little Patuxent rivers, the Potomac river and I know I've read about them being in the Anacostia. As a side note, redbreast have been a frequent catch for my brother and I recently. We fished the Gwynns Falls in southwest Baltimore twice the past week. First trip my brother caught 67 fish over 3-4 hours, mostly redbreast, I caught 35, mostly redbreast. Second trip he caught 31 fish, 26 of which were redbreast. I caught 12 fish, 9 of which were redbreast.
I live in Calvert County, but these fish were caught in St. Mary’s County. I’ve never really fished the Patuxent much further north than Prince Frederick, but I’m hoping to the summer. Thanks for commenting!
Holy moly. Gonna try it when I am there this weeekend
Hope you got one!
He's just a little feller
Small maybe for you, but one of the bigger fish I've ever reeled in. Thanks for watching !
Yummy. We had a boy wrestle a 120iber on 20ib test a few years ago on Lake Texoma.
Holy smokes! That's amazing. Thanks for watching!
Carp dont eat jigs and its probably starving
Carp are omnivores, so they will eat anything. The carp in that body of water are very healthy. Also check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/aEUTMVsAp1k/v-deo.htmlsi=biJcziPLE5glphuf
Amazing catch! You never know what you’re gonna get there.
You got that right! I was not expecting it to bite a soft plastic. Thanks for watching!
Fun bite. Snakehead is probably pound for pound the best fight in my book but carp is a close second.
It was like reeling in a big red drum! It just didn't want to come up from the bottom. Thanks for watching!
You gonna need a bigger net…😂
Most definitely! Actually the big net was at home because I never expected to hook something like that that day.
Were there any Mulberry Trees in that area? I believe at the end of May\June is when Mulberry Trees start producing their berries and carp will hang out under the trees eating the berries that drop into the water. Fly fisherman match the hatch with flies that look like Mulberries.
I have heard that they do eat those berries. In the immediate area of where I hooked into it, there weren't any trees really since I was a hundred or so feet from the shoreline. Thanks for watching.
I am in Southern MD know any good places to go snakehead fishing?
I've heard the creek leading out into Mallows Bay holds snakehead.
I doubt we'll ever fully remove snake heads and catfish so as long as the no limit is there I'm keeping whatever since I like to cook what i catch, theyre also $15 a lb in my store and they taste good.
💯 %
Thats the 8inch fish sub size snakehead. Good eats.
Hilarious!
